Become An Assessor

Fancy a year of FREE theatre?

Think you know what GREAT theatre looks like?

Why not join our cohort of assessors who see hundreds of shows every year and make nominations every week which recognise the best of independent theatre across the UK.
We are always looking for new assessors, from across a range of backgrounds – age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and disability. Regarding the latter, it must be noted, however, that a number of OffWestEnd venues are not wheelchair accessible.
We are currently (May-June 2023) especially seeking assessors for our Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) categories, so if you have a particular interest in this area, and maybe you have children you would like to take to the theatre as “associate assessors”, please click below and fill in the form.
We encourage you to first view a 90 second clip which is the intro speech given by Louise Jameson, actor and OffWestEnd patron, before she presented one of the TYA awards at the Offies Awards Ceremony in February 2023 at the Alexandra Palace Theatre – click
to watch this clip.

Click above to submit your application to be an assessor – but before you do, please read the info below which will explain how our assessments work, and the role of the assessor.
In your application, we will ask you to provide the following – if you are applying as you are especially interested in assessing theatre for young audiences, make sure your application explains why you are interested in this area of theatre:
Some background about yourself, both generally and about your interest in theatre
Why you would like to become an Offies / OnComm assessor
A sample review / assessment of a show you have seen recently
We will contact you on receipt of your email, and let you know what happens next. We may ask you to do one or two trial assessments, though we may also decide to accept you immediately, depending on your experience and your sample assessment.

ABOUT BEING AN OFFIES ASSESSOR

Our assessors fall into two groups:
for the Offies – for “full run” (10+ performances) plays and musicals and shorter run shows in the following categories: opera, cabaret, IDEA (shows that are Immersive / Devised / Experimental / Atypical), theatre for young audiences (TYA), Community / Outreach / Youth, and online shows
for the OffComm (for short runs) and for the OffFest (shows in festivals)

FOR THE OFFIES

Anyone with the relevant experience can apply to be an Offies assessor.
For the Offies awards, assessors are invited to add their name to a schedule of shows opening in the next few months. Assessors will then attend the show, and submit their assessment, using a standard template, within 24 hours of seeing the show. Assessors will be expected to commit to seeing 2-4 shows per month Assessors will receive a free ticket and a programme, but at this time they are expected to cover their own travel costs to attend the venue.
For the online shows category, assessors are sent updates when new shows are added to the schedule of shows that need assessing. Some shows can be seen at the assessor’s convenience, but some shows require viewing on a particular date and time. Assessors will then attend the show, and submit their assessment, using a standard template, within 24 hours of seeing the show.

FOR THE OFFCOMM / OFFFEST

For the OffComm for short run shows and the OffFest for short run shows at festivals, a number of online reviewers and bloggers have agreed to be the assessors for this scheme, and the company / producer / venue can invite some or all of these to see the show. If two of these agree on the merits of the show, then an OffComm will be awarded.
If you are would like more info on becoming an OffComm or OffFest assessor, please contact the Offies Administrator on .
